Battery powered weed eaters have a special place here at TekEons. We have realized the insanity of holding a gas-powered engine a couple of feet from our ears, and having it spew exhaust fumes and loud noises so close to our face. Battery-powered weed eaters give us the perfect alternative. They have similar power to gas (depending on which ones you buy), are useful for most lawn trimming needs, and have much less noise and vibration all while producing no poisonous fumes. Also, depending on the brand, using the unit in light rain may not be advised because of the electronic nature of the unit. But if you need a reliable trimmer that produces enough power for 30 – 90 minutes of use (depending on your circumstances) we can recommend the DeWalt Flexvolt 60v unit and the various Ego weed eaters.
Some drawbacks though are pricing and battery life. One example of this is the Husqvarna FSA 57. Although priced at $200 (at the time of our research) for the unit, battery, and battery charger we still would rate this unit low. We admit that $200 does sound reasonable until you realize you get a max of 20 minutes of trimming time and have to recharge it for the next 80 to 90 minutes. And yes this may be exactly what you might need for a small lawn with few trees, no flower beds, or fence lines. So it basically works great if your house is out in the middle of a field! There are other alternatives that give longer battery life and/or shorter recharge times.
We looked at a lot of other brands, including cheap Chinese knockoffs, but our pick is by far Ego brand weed eaters. The battery system is one of the best on the market currently. Some models even have the compatibility to be used with the EGO POWER+ Commercial Series Backpack Battery (BAX1501) and Commercial Backpack Link (BXH1001). This battery backpack reduces the weight of the trimmer itself and allows for longer trimming times for houses (or commercial property) that have trees, flower beds, and fence lines. In other words a house not out in the middle of a field. The above-mentioned Dewalt Flexvolt 60v units are a very close 2nd.
This is only the tip of the iceberg and our TekResearchers are compiling even more info about battery-powered weed eaters so we can give you a comprehensive review and comparison. Have you found one brand or model to work better than another? Had a good or bad experience with these types of Tech? Do you have a positive or negative experience with battery-powered weed eaters?
